Mofokeng’s performances for Bucs have drawn the attention of various European clubs, and the most recent team to show interest is Barca.
Former Ajax Cape Town midfielder Mkhanyiseli Siwahla has expressed his thoughts on Orlando Pirates’ young talent Relebohile Mofokeng’s possible transfer to La Liga powerhouse FC Barcelona.
Recent local and international reports have surfaced, indicating that Barca have contacted the Soweto giants to inquire about the 20-year-old’s availability.
It has been reported that the five-time Uefa Champions League winners are considering adding the emerging South African footballer to their Barca Atlètic team.
However, although many South Africans appear to be welcoming the news, Siwahla feels Mofokeng might struggle to adjust at Barcelona, recommending he should consider joining other smaller clubs within La Liga rather than Barca.
SIWAHLA SAID THIS:
“Mofokeng has been performing well, and for me, he could even play in LaLiga. It’s positive that he’s being linked with such a prestigious club. However, there are other teams better-suited for him than Barcelona. He needs to start at a level where he can grow,” Siwahla told KickOff.com.
“Barcelona has a unique environment, where they typically sign players from their own youth development ranks, similar to what used to happen at Ajax Amsterdam. They are not accustomed to purchasing young talent from outside.
“Their philosophy emphasizes developing players from a very young age, and it’s not easy for them to integrate an outsider at the ages of 17, 18, or 19, especially since their young players are often already embedded in the first team and familiar with the club’s culture,” explained the Ajax Cape Town academy product.
“Mofokeng’s style of play may be well-suited to Spanish football, but he would have a better chance of succeeding at clubs that finish in positions five, six, or seven in LaLiga. There, he could truly thrive and develop,” he added.
“He should consider joining well-run teams that are competing for a Top Eight finish. That would provide him with the right environment for growth.”
THE PICTURE
Mofokeng joined Pirates’ senior team in the latter stages of the 2022-23 season, and since then, he has consistently impressed under Jose Riveiro’s supervision.
His outstanding performances have made him one of the most reliable players at the Soweto giants. Mofokeng has also quickly attracted the attention of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.
Last season, clubs such as Scotland’s Glasgow Rangers, Austrian club FC Red Bull Salzburg, and Egypt’s Al Ahly were reportedly interested in acquiring his services.
Additionally, he underwent trials at the English club Wolverhampton Wanderers following the impressive 2022-23 Premier Soccer League campaign.
WHAT NEXT FOR MOFOKENG?
Given Mofokeng’s skills and his capability to play without apprehension, it would not be surprising if Barcelona eventually secure his signature.
For the time being, the fan-favourite star will seek to assist Pirates in performing well in the Caf Champions League. The Buccaneers will host Al Ahly at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
